{"id":2811,"date":"2024-04-30T19:56:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T19:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hfhpulm.com\/info\/?p=2811"},"modified":"2024-04-30T19:56:02","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T19:56:02","slug":"2024-medicare-oxygen-guidelines-requirements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hfhpulm.com\/info\/?p=2811","title":{"rendered":"2024 Medicare Oxygen Guidelines\/Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"http:\/\/hfhpulm.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2024-Medicare-Oxygen-Guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attached document<\/a>, Hart Medical has outlined an additional step to provide supplemental oxygen for our patients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As this is a Medicare guideline, I suspect all other DME providers and insurance companies will adopt or have adopted these changes as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prescribe oxygen the patient needs to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Have an oxygen saturation \u2264 88% (or \u2264 89% with any of the following):<ul><li>Dependent edema suggesting congestive heart failure (-OR-)<\/li><li>Pulmonary hypertension or cor pulmonale, determined by measurement of pulmonary artery pressure, gated blood pool scan, echocardiogram, or \u201cP\u201d pulmonale on EKG (P wave greater than 3 mm in standard leads II, III, or AVF) (-OR-)<\/li><li>Erythrocythemia with a hematocrit greater than 56%<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Have an oxygen saturation \u2264 88% on room air with exercise<\/li><li>Have an oxygen saturation \u2264 88% during sleep for at least 5 minutes (does not have to be continuous)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the oxygen prescribing criteria, the PRESCRIBING PROVIDER will now need to do one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Mention the evidence of oxygen saturation test results in the chart notes (-OR-)<\/li><li>Add a new chart note regarding the evidence of oxygen saturation test results (-OR-)<\/li><li>Co-sign the actual oxygen saturation test results<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since all of our walk oxygen tests and 6 minute walk tests are signed by the PFT fellow and the K17 OPD rounder (or Mike Lazar on Fridays), choice #3 will often not be applicable.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, to be compliant with the new Medicare requirements: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Please make sure that you comment directly on the oxygen saturation test in your progress note (i.e., when you see the patient in clinic) -OR-generate a new note in Epic.<\/li><li>One of these notes should coincide to when you generate an oxygen prescription in Epic.<\/li><li>You note should also include that \u201cthe patient\u2019s medical condition will benefit from oxygen\u201d.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the attached document, Hart Medical has outlined an additional step to provide supplemental oxygen for our patients.&nbsp;
