Fellowship

Highlights

The Monday IPD conference now has journal clubs integrated into the curriculum, and this has been very well received. Some of the articles previously discussed include studies on novel therapies for COPD such as ensifentrine, a phosphodiesterase 3 and 4 inhibitor, the impact of mucous plugs on COPD mortality, outcomes with long-acting bronchodilators, the use of roflumilast in symptomatic COPD, and the cardiovascular risks associated with COPD. Other topics have covered the role of anaerobic antibiotic coverage in aspiration pneumonia, the efficacy of corticosteroid and cyclophosphamide therapy in acute exacerbations of interstitial lung disease, and risk factors related to PM2.5 air pollution. The conference has also highlighted critical care and pulmonary vascular advances, including the PEERLESS trial comparing catheter-based thrombolysis versus thrombectomy in pulmonary embolism and the NEJM sotatercept trial in pulmonary arterial hypertension. Make every effort to attend—journal club is now built into conference, and it even comes with CME!

The 3rd years will be busy studying for the boards in October (despite their desire to instead engage in their research elective) - so do not disturb them (although you may want to pimp them to test their knowledge of pulmonary medicine)

Center of Excellence Recognition

The Henry Ford Health Sarcoidosis Lung Disease Program has officially been designated as a World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders (WASOG) Center of Excellence — a designation held by only 34 centers in the U.S. and the very first of its kind in Michigan.

This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to the four pillars identified by WASOG as essential to advancing care:

  • Multidisciplinary clinical care
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Community outreach

This achievement highlights not only our leadership in sarcoidosis but also our dedication to improving outcomes and addressing healthcare disparities for patients across the region.

PH

Social & Community News

On September 13, the Henry Ford Health Pulmonary Hypertension Team proudly joined the PHight against Pulmonary Hypertension! Together with our community, $11,000 was raised to support the vital work of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association!

We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated, donated, and supported this important cause.

Education

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s PHPN Symposium attracted hundreds of clinicians who care for people with pulmonary hypertension — from nurses and respiratory therapists, to doctors, pharmacists, and trainees. The Pulmonary Hypertension Professional Network Symposium is held every two years in odd-numbered years.

On Sept. 18-20, 2025, the symposium took place in Seattle with the theme “Igniting the PHight: Looking to the Future.”

The symposium featured sessions presented by world-class PH professionals, a poster hall, and lightning-round presentations about abstracts. In addition to the education, it provided opportunities to form invaluable professional connections that will last throughout attendees’ careers.

Although the symposium was designed for health care providers, people with PH were the ultimate beneficiaries. PH professionals gained knowledge and resources to better care for their patients and brought ideas and inspiration back to their clinics and colleagues.

We were proud to represent Henry Ford Health at this national event.
