This elective is designed to provide you with a dedicated opportunity to focus on your point of care ultrasound skills.
Expectations of this rotation are the following:
- Self Directed Education.
Use on-line resources to review topics. University of California-Irvine has their entire point of care ultrasound lecture series available on-line for free on Itunes. The following link will get you there. You will need to download itunes onto your desktop to be able to view the lectures:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/ucimc-ultrasound-education/id452550953
In addition, the new Qpath Exporte machines also have excellent embedded learning modules. One is available to at only staff/fellow request on the 5th floor – call MICU charge for the machine. The other located on Pod 5 – should not be moved from that unit.
- QA of your scans by faculty.
Upload your exams onto the Qpath on-line tool for review by faculty. The link is http://qpath.hfhs.org/qpath/
You will need Microsoft Silverlight installed on your computer for this to run properly. If it’s not on the computer in the fellows office and it doesn’t download automatically, please ask IT to upload the application to your computer.
The application can be accessed from any HFH computer with your log-in. (login is your email name. Use the password provided by Kesha).
When you are done reviewing your exams on Qpath, please use the email function in Qpath so that a faculty member is notified to review your exam.
- Teaching.
There may be opportunities for you to assist with various teaching sessions through the Henry Ford Ultrasound University or Wayne State University School of Medicine. You will be expected to participate. Please discuss with Dr. Mendez to identify potential opportunities during your elective.
- Sample Daily Schedule
8:00 AM: US Fellow identifies patients to be US by discussing with critical care fellow/ICU residents.
8:30 AM: Critical Care Rounds begin. US fellow will focus on performing assessments on patients who are hemodynamically unstable patients so that 1) immediate feedback can be provided during rounds, 2) faculty can confirm findings that can affect management of patient care.
~11:00 AM (timing dependent upon length of rounds): Plan for re-examination of patients requiring re-assessment (e.g. hypovolemic patient s/p bolus of fluids -> reassess IVC collapsibility)
Afternoon:
- Review uploaded exams on Qpath
- Self-directed learning using University of Califonia Irivine on-line lectures
- Work on journal club or case report for Newsletter

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct to Drs. Nazneen or Mendez. Happy Scanning!
As a reminder, our goal is for you to perform a minimum number of exams to demonstrate competency by the end of your fellowship.
