Lung Cancer Screening

(Originally posted on: May 10, 2017

The lung cancer screening program is now fully operational on main campus.  We continue to grow the program with the plan on having it operational throughout the entire system over the next year.

Mike Simoff is the Medical Director and Lana Saugrich is the Administrative Director of the program.

Any provider can place an Epic order for  “REFER LUNG CANCER”.  By doing this your patient will be scheduled for a joint decision making conference, saving you the time in clinic.  We will address smoking cessation in your patients that still smoke, and we will schedule the CT.  You will receive a copy of the CT result as well as a communication regarding your case.  Follow-up recommendations for screening will then be handled by the LCS team, you will not have to worry about communicating, scheduling, or any other issues with your patients.  We will alert you to any issues or needed follow-up.

If you have questions you can contact Mieke Simoff, Lana, Dr. Rolando Peralta, or email the LCS team at lungcancerscreening@hfhs.org and we will do everything we can to assist you.

SOME MORE INFORMATION

Attached is the presentation that Bruno (and now our lung cancer screening NPs) provide to patients.  Please feel free to use some or all of it when you speak with patients about lung cancer screening.  Some additional information:

  1.  The age cutoff in the Lung Cancer Screening order is 80.  However, the cutoff for CMS is 77.  So, if you are ordering the test on someone between the ages of 77 and 80, you may want to either figure out if their insurance covers it or let them know that it may not be covered and try to get it pre-authorized prior to definitively recommending it.
  2. If you have a patient tell you that they were charged for the test, please let Bruno know as we can investigate that.  It should not happen.
  3. To order the study, you need to document that you went over the indications and had them participate in shared decision making.  Bruno uses a dot phrase for that which you can steal from him.  It is .bdgsharednote.
  4. When ordering a lung cancer screening CT, you must also put in the code for “visit to determine LDCT Eligibility” – G0296
  5. If you prefer, you can always refer patients to our lung cancer screening team who can schedule the patient for a separate visit during which they will do shared decision making and then get them a CT on the same day. To do this (or ask any other questions), fell free to reach out to Robbyn (rsmith14@hfhs.org) or Rachel (radler1@hfhs.org).
