How to handle narcotic prescription:
- Nurses to verify contract on file à If no contract, patient can be referred back to primary care while physician is out. Patient will be sent a contract to review and bring to next visit.
- If contract in place, ok to refill short-term until primary pulmonary returns.
- Goal is for all patients receiving narcotic scripts through pulmonary will have a contract on file.
(Once we figure out MAPS: If contract is in place and patient is unfamiliar to provider – MAPS to be run on the patient and documented in the chart by nursing. If MAPS shows discrepancies in filling (multiple providers or multiple pharmacies) and patient is on contract, primary pulm or covering pulm will notify patient of violation of contract and inability to fill script. Ok to recommend return to primary care or referral to pain clinic.)
