Ordering a sweat chloride test for patients

(Originally posted on: October 18, 2017

If a sweat chloride test needs to be performed to help workup a patient with bronchiectasis (to rule in/out cystic fibrosis):

To set up the test

  1. The provider or the patient can call the main number at the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Center at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan (313-745-5541)
  2. Appointments are made for Monday and Wednesday mornings.
  3. Please give the patient a written prescription that states “sweat chloride test for Cystic Fibrosis”. They will need to bring the prescription and insurance information to the appointment.
  4. The test is performed on the 3rd floor of the specialty clinic, 3950 Beaubien Blvd (across the street from Detroit Receiving Hospital).
  5. The results will be given to the provider—they will not be released directly to the patient
  6. Test results are usually available the afternoon after the test. You can call to get the result quickly.

Use this HFHS Prescription Form to order the test

The order can also be faxed to the lab (313-993-2948).
