Research Syllabus

Updated for year 2020

Research in 1st and 2cnd year

All 1st and 2cnd year PCCM fellows will be assigned research electives. Typically one month in first year and 2 months in second year. They may be in the form of 2 week blocks.

Requirements:

  1. Devise a primary research project in which you are the primary fellow responsible for conducting the project. You will work with your research mentor (the PI)
  2. Journal club – present an article with the purpose of critically analyzing the methodology and study design of the paper to best interpret the results.
  3. Didactics. Lectures (most online but may be in person) on various topics (statistics, study design, developing and testing a hypothesis, etc).
  4. Pick a secondary project – usually a project abandoned by graduating fellow that may need small tweaks to get published.

Research in 3rd year

To continue research in third year a fellow must indicate interest by MARCH 1st of their second year. They must also have completed all of the requirements from the first 2 years of electives (see above). This track is designed to for a fellow who will continue with their original research project with the goal of publication of the work. They will also present the findings at a national conference, although they may have done this in second year depending on the timing of the project. by the end of fellowship.  This track will also provide fellows with basic research principles of basic research including, study design, basic statistics, lit reviews.  Original research is required because it develops the important skill set of understanding the concept of the scientific method (asking a question, developing a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, and drawing conclusions from the testing).

Expectations and Goals

Use the curriculum in conjunction with this syllabus

1. Each fellow should have a project to which they are identified as the primary fellow.  They should read/view didactic materials that address basic principles of research, as outlined in this syllabus.  Completion of each of these assignments will be required before proceeding to the next topic, but the deadlines generally depend on the research elective month.

2. Assignments must to be completed by the end of the elective month. Assignments will have a realistic deadline, and will take into account that the elective is dedicated to these tasks.
