Situation
A successful Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) app on provider phones pilot was completed in HFHS EDs to provide a use case specific to provider needs. Standard large-size VRI system spread is in progress. The provider phone app will provide enhanced access to qualified interpreters.
Background
Individuals who are limited English proficient (LEP) are challenged by communication barriers that can result in health disparities, errors and harm. There are a number of legal and regulatory requirements mandating access to qualified interpreters to protect our patient’s right to participate in and make informed decisions about their own health care.
Assessment
A successful pilot was completed with providers (physicians, residents, MLPs) in the ED setting (HFH, Fairlane) to ensure a standard and secure approach to using the interpreter app on HFHS provided phones.
